Bioengineering offers solutions to many conditions and illnesses that the pharmaceutical industry has so far failed to resolve. Now is a great time to be looking at the bioprocessing sector.
It’s an area that’s got a lot of attention, it’s capturing a lot of imagination and with that a lot of investment. That investment is going to drive a lot of work, excitement and challenges.
Biopharmaceutical Process development is part of the chain where people take discoveries and turn them into effective medicines. There is a critical and worthwhile purpose to all this - how we get effective medicines that are affordable to actually treat people. The BBTC at Newcastle University has attracted funding which means that there are new laboratory facilities and state of the art equipment not yet seen in other academic institutions.

The first course at the BBTC is a research degree with an annual intake of 12 students which began in October 2009.
The “EngD in Biopharmaceutical Process Development” is the first Doctoral level programme to offer training in leading edge scientific and engineering techniques like Quality by Design and Process Analytical Technology and management skills.
It exploits academia and industry working together to deliver the bio-business leaders of the future and solving the industrial research challenges of the present.
This Engineering Doctorate provides an opportunity to gain industrial experience and training, while at the same time studying for a research degree within the University.
